PIANO LANDMARKS 2010
INTRODUCTION FROM THE GUEST ARTISTIC DIRECTOR
I am thrilled to offer in 2010 an intriguing window into 300 years of obsession with the mathematics of music, and the physics of playing the piano, the results of which stand today as masterpieces revered by audiences and performers alike as landmarks of the repertoire.
Much more than just genres, Preludes, Fugues & Etudes are truly versatile musical vehicles by which composers may play the game of numbers, and by which pianists may play the games of technical virtuosity and musical puzzle solving.
Join us for this unparalleled opportunity to hear the powerful musical yield of three centuries of gameplay, from Bach's deepest truths, through Chopin's encoded wisdom and Debussy's private homage, to the hidden meanings of Shostakovich.
Juxtaposed with these are masterworks of Schumann, Stravinsky, Rachmaninov and Bartók, as well as rare glimpses of mystical Sitsky and transcendental Herskowitz, and the dizzying heights of a dramatically fugal Beethoven finale.
I will personally introduce each concert, with the exception of Concert Three for which I'm joined by distinguished colleagues in performing and reflecting on Bach and his sublime creations.
The South Melbourne Town Hall, itself a Melbourne Landmark, provides the perfect setting for this all-day festival. There will be opportunities throughout the day to meet the performers, dine at nearby restaurants and cafes, and to check out some of the special 'impromptu' events in between the four concerts, back again in 2010 by popular acclaim.
I guarantee a truly unique day of musical excitement, and look forward to sharing with you my fascination with this remarkable music.
